While "health" is defined as a state of optimum physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being, "wellness" is defined as a state of health characterised by a positive emotional outlook. The Naturopath strives to increase the patient's level of health. Even in cases of severe disease, a high level of wellness can be achieved.
At a time when modern technology, environmental pollution, poor diet, and stress play an enormous role in health issues, the profession of the Naturopath is increasing in importance. She or he is able to treat both acute and chronic ailments successfully. Frequently, the Naturopath is the last resort in a patient's long search for health.
The origins of Naturopathy
The principles of Naturopathy were first used by the Hippocratic School of Medicine in about 400B.C. The Greek philosopher Hippocrates believed in viewing the whole person in regards to finding a cause of disease, and using the laws of nature to induce cure. It was from this original school of thought that Naturopathy takes its principles. These principles are:
o The healing power of nature- nature has the innate ability to heal
o Identify and treat the cause - there is always an underlying cause, be it physical, menta,l or emotional
o Do no harm- a naturopath will never use treatments that may create other conditions
o Treat the whole person- when preparing a treatment plan, all aspects of a person’s being are taken into consideration
o The physician as teacher- a naturopath empowers the client to take responsibility for his/her own health by teaching self-care
o Prevention is better than cure - a naturopath may remove toxic substances and situations from a person’s lifestyle to prevent the onset of further disease
